Professor Lawrence Haddad is the Director of the Institute of Development Studies in the UK and has conducted applied research worked at the intersection of malnutrition, poverty and agriculture for over 2 decades. Before joining IDS he was the Director of the Food Consumption and Nutrition Dvision of the International Food Policy Research Institute and prior to that a Lecturer in Development Economics at the University of Warwick in the UK.

Prof. Patrick J. Stover

Patrick J. Stover, Ph.D. is Professor and Director of the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University and Director of the United Nation’s University Food and Nutrition Program for Social & Human Development. He graduated from Saint Joseph’s University with a BS degree in Chemistry and was awarded the Molloy Chemistry Award at graduation. He received a PhD degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from the Medical College of Virginia and performed his postdoctoral studies in Nutritional Sciences at the University of California at Berkeley.

The Stover laboratory studies the biochemical, genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that underlie the relationships between folic acid and human pathologies including neural tube defects & other developmental anomalies, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Prof. Stover’s specific interests include the regulation of folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism and cellular methylation reactions, molecular basis of the fetal origins hypothesis, development of mouse models to elucidate mechanisms of folate-related pathologies, and translational control of gene expression by ferritin.

In 1996 Prof. Stover received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from President Clinton, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their independent careers. He received the ERL Stokstad Award in Nutritional Biochemistry from the American Society for Nutritional Sciences in 1999 and has been selected as an Outstanding Educator four times by Cornell Merrill Presidential Scholars.

Prof. Stover is currently a member of the National Academies of Sciences’ Food and Nutrition Board. He serves on the editorial board for the Annual Reviews of Nutrition, the Journal of Biological Chemistry and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Dr. Veena Rao

Former Secretary to Government of India
Mission Advisor, Karnataka Nutrition Mission


A former Secretary to the Govt of India with domain expertise on malnutrition, Dr. Veena Rao has written extensively on the subject. She has also been instrumental in implementing projects using innovative strategies to address malnutrition

Some of her major publications are:
1) Malnutrition and Emergency: What it costs the Nation, 2008
2) Manual for Judicial Officers for Combating Trafficking 2006
3) Rescue and Rehabilitation of Child Victims of Trafficking, 2005
4) Manual for Social Workers dealing with Trafficking, 2005

Her expertise covers an intimate understanding of core government functioning both at national and state levels, especially because of her long experience as the Joint Secretary, Department of Women and Child Development, Government of India as also because of the experience gained earlier in several capacities in the Karnataka State Government. As Director-General of CAPART, the government’s funding agency for the NGO sector, she gained a lot of knowledge and experience on the working of the NGO sector in India. Her strongest expertise is in the area of malnutrition. In February 2008 she published a book “Malnutrition, an Emergency: What it costs the Nation”. She has also been closely involved in the implementation of 2 Pilot Projects in Maharashtra based on the Intergenerational Strategy.
