Britannia at CGI

Britannia’s commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative was selected for a progress reporter slot in the Closing plenary of CGI’s Annual meeting – a prestigious opportunity hosted by Bill Clinton himself. Vinita Bali was presented with the opportunity to showcase Britannia’s work in the area of health and nutrition to an audience of over a thousand eminent individuals – world leaders, former heads of state, hundreds of Global CEO’s and members of the media.

The Clinton Global Initiative is a non-partisan catalyst for action, bringing together a community of global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the worlds pressing challenges. To fulfill the action oriented mission of CGI, all members devise practical solutions to global issues through the development of specific and measurable commitments of action. In 2007, Britannia had made a commitment on the Clinton Global Initiative to ensure every child’s right to growth and development through good food everyday.

Towards our commitment to Children’s Right to Growth and Development, Britannia fortified several of its food lines with vitamins and minerals, and spearheaded the awareness and advocacy for improving nutrition levels among the vulnerable sections of the Indian Society

It was a great honour for Britannia to be chosen out of 1400 commitments on the CGI to present an update, and this further strengthened our commitment to the cause of Nutrition.

In 2007, Britannia Industries partnered with the Global Alliance For Improved Nutrition (GAIN) to launch anew commitment that would leverage its existing lines of food products such as biscuits or cookies, to address malnutrition among children in India. Currently 75% of children below the age of 3 and 60% of school children in India suffer from anemia simply because they cannot afford and/ or lack access to high quality nutritious food.

To find an effect solution to this issue, Britannia partnered with GAIn to develop a whole range of vitamin and mineral- Fortified products for all households, and launched several advocacy campaigns to raise awareness of its new products in urban and rural areas. One its largest product lines – biscuits presented an ideal opportunity for this initiative. Already purchased by over 50% of households in india, Britannia biscuits could easily be fortified with Iron and reach millions of Children.

Recognising this opportunity, Britannia immediately launched a range of innovative products such as “Tiger Iron Zor” and fortified Bread. Through this model, Britannia reached 180 million children across India while continuing to achieve business objectives

Taking these efforts to the next level, Britannia partnered with Navjoti Foundation, a local partner (founded and managed by Dr. Kiran Bedi), to provide Tiger iron- Fortified biscuits to children and conduct a field trial on efficacy. The results are truly encouraging – with mean Haemoglobin levels moving from 9.48 g /dl to 12.63 g/dl in 3 months. It has convinced us to invest our resources in larger projects and take steps to tackle the malnutrition issue.

Vinita received a tremendous round of applause during and at the conclusion of her update. Indeed it was a very proud moment for Britannia and we would like to thank all the Britannians for their efforts and hard work that has made all of this possible.
